1983 Renault Alliance
It was more precisely in June 1982 that the 1983 model Alliance was launched. The diamond logo was properly placed on the grille, but the AMC logo appeared on the trunk lid and the rear window, so as not to forget that the Alliance was manufactured by AMC à Kenosha under Renault license.
The first Renault vehicle produced in the United States for the North American market, the Alliance was available in two different body styles:
* a 4-door sedan (code name L42) corresponding to the French "Renault 9" with a grille styled after the Renault 11
* a 2-door coupe (code name M42), a model unknown in France that more closely resembled the 3-door Renault 11
Both incorporated the new seats already present in the "Renault 9", providing more legroom for rear passengers.
Its base price was set at $5 595

Motor Trend "Car of the Year"! and other recognitions
That same year, the Alliance received the prestigious award given by "Motor Trend" magazine: "Car of the Year"
An award that normally goes each year to an American production.
Motor Trend stated: "The Alliance may well be the best-assembled first-year car we've ever seen. Way to go Renault!"
Out of the 8 categories tested for the Motor Trend "Car of the Year" ranking, the Alliance placed first 6 times and second 2 times.
You will find all the details on the page below, with an excellent article from "Motor Trend" written in 2022 explaining this rather surprising choice in the land of the automobile!

ID plate Renault Alliance MT
AMC introduced an additional range to the Renault Alliance model lineup, to fit between the DL and Limited offerings, the Alliance MT will be available in both 2- and 4-door styles. Huh? Did we say MT? You betcha. AMC has decided to offer a limited-edition Alliance to commemorate the Alliance's victory in our Car of the Year competition.
The MT is available only with a metallic gunmetal exterior and almond beige interior. Outside, the MT features body-color aluminum wheels and almond pinstriping on the rear deck, along the sides, and on the hood. Most of the exterior brightwork has been blacked out or rendered the same soothing, friendly beige color as the pinstripes. All models will be fitted with a black luggage rack atop the trunk lid. The interior is fitted with the same fabric and seating as the top-of-the-line Alliance Limited. The steering wheel is a leather-rimmed, 4-spoke affair like that fitted to the Fuego Turbo. A numbered "Car of the Year" dash plaque is also part of the package.
Mechanically, the Alliance MT is identical to the DL version, powered by a 55-hp 1.4-liter engine driving the front wheels through a standard 5-speed manual transaxle.
Options include power steering and electric windows and door locks as well as leather interior. Prices for the 2-door Alliance MT start at $7,450 and the 4-door model can be had for as little as $7,700.
$1,708 worth of equipment
- 3,000 units for the 2-door coupe version
- 6,000 units for the 4-door sedan version
For now, we have not found any other official documents or photographs presenting the 4-door Alliance MT sedan.
A new quest for the Holy Grail?
